Episome Granted Patent for “EpiCellulyse XT” in Europe

We are delighted to announce that our in-house technology, Epicellulyse XT, has obtained a patent from the European Patent Office (EPO). The patent covers our “Hydrolysis of paper sludge cellulose for biogas production” method, which is also known as Epicellulyse XT. This patent is registered under the patent number EP3314003B1.

EpiCellulyse XT has the potential to make the pulp and paper industry more sustainable and environmentally-friendly. Currently, this industry is one of the world’s least sustainable sectors and in dire need of innovative technologies. Our EpiCellulyse XT technology allows the production of biogas and organic fertiliser from paper sludge, which is a waste by-product from paper production processes. This is game-changing for businesses as it allows them to sustainably transform previously unusable byproducts into a source of revenue.

In the past, there had been many attempts to reuse this waste material as a raw material in biogas production but the cellulose present in paper sludge always caused crusting, foaming and plugging problems in biogas digesters. In addition, the amount of biogas released from the sludge per unit time was not enough to make the process profitable. However, the glucose subunits found in the cellulose was always a mouthwatering prospective material for biogas operators due to its high energy content.

There was a possibility to break down the cellulose in paper sludge by taking advantage of concentrated cellulases. Unfortunately, the cost of these additives was too high to allow the operations to be feasible.

But our scientists at Episome discovered a solution. EpiCellulyse XT technology facilitates the pretreatment of the cellulose content in the paper sludge, thereby making it suitable for biogas and natural fertiliser production. We achieve this by recycling enzymes and allowing on-site action by carefully cultivated natural microorganisms. As a result, EpiCellulyse XT not only has the potential to make the paper industry a more profitable business but it also has the potential to make it sustainable and environmentally-friendly.

Episome Biotech is proud to be the inventor of this technology and to help make the world more sustainable.
